This is not over. Americans United has endured for nearly 80 years and we’re not giving up now. We’ve been preparing for this fight for more than a year. We’ve been here before and survived. We will survive again.
Last time, we sued the Trump administration 10 times. We won some of those lawsuits and worked with the Biden administration to defeat many remaining Trump policies. All of that work was instrumental in stemming the rising tide of Christian Nationalism.
I won’t try to sugarcoat it: This time it will likely be worse. But we have been planning for this possibility for a very long time. We learned a lot from the last time Trump had power. We are ready with new strategies to fight back and AU has more lawyers on staff than ever before. Never forget that the majority of people reject Christian Nationalism, and we have the promise of the Constitution on our side.
Here’s a rough sketch of the plan: We are going to fight against the Christian Nationalist rules and policies we saw in the past from the Trump administration – rules allowing employers, public service providers and others receiving taxpayer funds to misuse religious or moral beliefs to discriminate and deny service to people they don’t like. Project 2025 is coming, and we’ve turned that guidebook inside out, analyzing it from every angle. We are ready.
We also expect increased attacks on public education and efforts to siphon even more taxpayer dollars to religious schools. This has been the core of our fight since our founding, and we will work to ensure that American children have access to free, secular public schools. Voters rejected efforts to expand private school vouchers in all three states where the issue was on the ballot. We’ve got the coalitions, data and attorneys in place for this fight. Public schools are, in some ways, the most crucial bastion of church-state separation and we will fight for every child.
We will be vigilant in vetting and opposing any Supreme Court nominees and other people from the billion-dollar Shadow Network who may be nominated to other key positions of power. We’ll also explore fixes for the courts for the future.
AU is unique because we have top experts in litigation, public policy, communications and outreach. We will use the combined power of our integrated advocacy strategies to counter Trump administration attacks on church-state separation. They have the power. But on this issue, we have “We the People.” We are building a movement that will be a bulwark against this rising tide of white Christian Nationalism. Help us. We will be organizing and fighting in your community, county, city and state – and everywhere.
Remember, church-state separation is the cure for white Christian Nationalism.
