Frequently Asked Questions about Donating to AU

How much is an annual membership with Americans United?

An annual membership with AU starts at $35 a year. (You are, of course, welcome and encouraged to support our work by making a donation at whatever level you can afford!) In addition to providing much-needed funding for our many legal, legislative, grassroots and education efforts, your financial support entitles you to receive 11 issues of our award-winning journal Church & State and periodic updates on pressing religious liberty concerns. Additional benefits are given at higher levels of contribution.

Can I donate / renew / join online or through the mail?

Yes, you can donate, renew, or join online.

Or mail to:
Americans United for Separation of Church and State
1310 L St NW, Suite 200
Washington, DC 20005

Are there other ways to give to AU?

Yes. Check them out here.

I'm already giving AU monthly gifts, but need to change my financial info. How do I do that?

Thank you so much for your generous year-round support of church-state separation! Please visit our Self Service Portal to update your payment information or upgrade your amount (to lower or cancel your enrollment, please email with your request). If you would rather make changes by phone, please call us at 202-466-3234 x213.

Is AU tax-exempt?

Yes — Americans United is designated by the IRS as a 501(c)3, non-profit organization; our Federal ID is #53-0184647. You may access a copy of our most recent IRS 990 form here.

Are my contributions to AU tax-deductible?

Yes, your giving may be deductible to the full extent of the law. Our Federal ID is #53-0184647.

Will I receive a thank-you letter for my donation?

Yes, Americans United will send you a written acknowledgement of your mailed or phoned-in donation within three weeks of processing your donation, or an email acknowledgement for your online donation immediately, for tax purposes. Please let us know if you do not receive an acknowledgement for your contribution within three weeks.

I recently joined AU. When will I receive my first issue of Church & State?

You can expect to receive your first issue within five weeks after we process your contribution.

Why did I receive another renewal notice, after having just recently renewed?

Thanks so much for renewing your membership! Remember that mailings are often in preparation up to several weeks before being mailed, so your donation may have been processed just as a reminder was going into the mail.

Can AU help me apply for corporate matching funds from my employer?

Yes. Please mail your matching gift application form to our office (address below). We will complete our portion of the form and return it to your employer.

How do I notify AU of a mailing or email address update?

Please visit our Self Service Portal. You can also email updates or call 202-466-3234 x213.

How can I learn more about AU?

You may access our most recent Annual Report here.

Has AU filed a nonprofit disclosure with my state?

Certain states require written disclosures for nonprofit organizations soliciting contributions. Click here to learn more.

I have a question about my membership / contribution that wasn't answered here. Who can help me?

Please contact us via email at [email protected], or call (202) 466-3234 x213. If you call before 9 AM or after 5 PM Eastern, please leave a message in voice mailbox 213, and we will respond as soon as possible.
