Today is Election Day. If you haven’t voted already, please do so.
As a reminder, Americans United is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means we may not endorse or oppose candidates for public office. However, we can address issues and take stands on ballot questions.
Ten states – Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and South Dakota – will have initiative questions on their ballots dealing with abortion. Americans United recommends that you vote to protect reproductive rights.
Private school vouchers are on the ballot in three states – Colorado, Kentucky and Nebraska. Americans United recommends that you vote against the creation or expansion of school voucher programs. (You can learn more about all these ballot initiatives here.)
This is an important election for church-state separation. In her weekly email to supporters of Americans United, President and CEO Rachel Laser observed:
“Church-state separation is on the ballot in school board races where candidates will decide whether our public schools remain secular and welcoming of all students, and ensure children have the freedom to read and learn.
“Church-state separation is on the ballot where we are electing those who will shape the future of our judiciary, which should decide cases based on the rule of law and not personal religious beliefs.
“No matter how you look at it, these elections will have serious consequences for church-state separation – and our freedom to live as ourselves and believe as we choose, which results from that separation.”
Do your part. Vote.
