In Washington, D.C., on July 11, AU Vice President of Public Policy Alessandro Terenzoni, in a hybrid event addressing new attorneys, spoke on the topic of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. The event was sponsored by the Washington Council of Lawyers.
In an event sponsored by the Georgetown Day School Policy Institute, three AU staffers — Alicia Johnson, AU’s national organizer and student network manager; Mariel Montero, public policy associate; and Jess Zalph, constitutional litigation fellow — discussed church-state separation, AU’s work and ways students can get involved at AU. The title of their presentation was “Church and State: One Nation Under God?”
In Des Moines, Iowa, on July 16, AU Senior Adviser Rob Boston spoke on the topic of “Sixteen Words: Defending the First Amendment Against Christian Nationalist Attacks.” He surveyed Christian Nationalist assaults on church-state separation on the national and state level.
In Santa Fe on July 23, AU President and CEO Rachel Laser spoke on “Protecting Freedom Without Favor: The Urgent Case for Church-State Separation.” The Humanist Society of New Mexico, Santa Fe Freethinkers Forum and UU Santa Fe co-sponsored the event.
In a virtual event on Aug 18., the AU Rochester (N.Y.) Chapter of Americans United hosted a presentation by Katherine Stewart. An award-winning author, Stewart discussed her latest book, the New York Times bestseller, Money, Lies, and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy. Stewart is also an AU Trustee.
In a virtual event on Aug. 16, the Orange County (Calif.) Chapter of AU presented “Beyond the Bench: Faith, Freedom & the Supreme Court,” a webinar in which AU’s experts discussed recent religious freedom cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
On Aug 24., in Bozeman, Mont., AU Church & State Editor Bruce Gourley addressed the local Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. His topic was “Church-State Separation is Under Siege: What You Can Do.”
